Skills Strategies International is highly experienced in coordinating and delivering traineeships. A traineeship is an opportunity to combine work and learning. Trainees develop workplace skills whilst contributing to an organisation. Traineeships provide an opportunity to gain:

{ a nationally recognised qualification on completion of training
{ a mix of off-the-job learning (in a classroom, online, or at an employer’s premises) and on-the-job learning (in the workplace)



Training WA funds a range of Existing Worker or Management Traineeships in areas that are determined to be in need of skills development. These traineeships provide an opportunity for upskilling in vital industry skills while getting practical experience on the job.

Employer Benefits:

  • A Training Plan outlining the units of competency will be devised between all parties which includes the employer, the trainee and the RTO. This takes into consideration the packaging rule requirements, the workplace requirements and ability to train and provide adequate and appropriate training opportunities and approximate dates that training will occur.

Skills Strategies International developed and delivered some of the first SBT’s in Australia.  We currently coordinate the Public Sector School Based Traineeships program which is a workforce development program that has been in existence for over 20 years.

An SBT is a combination of school, free on-job training in a Certificate II or III qualification and paid employment. Traineeships equip young people with evidence of acquired foundation and vocational skills and a nationally recognised qualification.The Certificate II or III qualification gained also meets the graduation requirements for the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). 

As a school based trainee, the student and parent/guardian enter into a training contract with an employer. The trainee is paid while they learn for the duration of their contract. Employers are required to provide students with opportunities to demonstrate the competencies that are a part of the relevant traineeship qualification.

How it works

The trainee and the employer enter into a legal agreement called a training contract. The contract lasts until the training is completed and the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and the employer agree the trainee is competent. A training contract cannot be terminated without the mutual agreement of both the trainee and the employer.

The trainee will be supervised by Skills Strategies International while learning on-job, and will also attend off-the-job training. The off-the-job training may be in the form of an online course, self-paced workbooks or classroom attendance (or a combination of all of the above). 

The State Government may subsidisethe off-the-job training component, meaning the trainee (or their employer)may payless towards course fees.  The employer may also be eligible for payroll tax exemption or other incentives.

What is the difference between a traineeship and an apprenticeship?

The difference between a traineeship and an apprenticeship is that a traineeship can be either a full-time or part-time employment based training arrangement, usually for around 12 -18 months (apprenticeships usually last for three to four years) and is generally in a non-trade related area. The traineeship also involves the trainee gaining a general qualification rather than a trade specific qualification.
